The Phillips New Testament in Modern English is an English translation of the New Testament translated by Anglican priest John Bertram Phillips. While the translation isn't well known it has many ardent fans including Os Guinness, Chuck Swindoll & the late Ray Stedman. Corrie ten Boom considered it her favorite in English. The songwriter Michael Card often used its wording. Phillips began by rewording the New Testament epistles for his church's youth group in modern English, which group met during WWII in bomb shelters. These he published in 1947 under the title Letters to Young Churches. In 1952 he added the Gospels. In 1955 he added Acts & titled it The Young Church in Action. In 1957 he added The Book of Revelation. Later he finished the whole of the New Testament, 1st publishing it in 1958, revising it & republishing it in 1961 & 1972. Phillips worked entirely from the Greek Testament. While his translation gives the reader new & unusual insights into the New Testament, it has the drawback that many editions were printed without verse numbers & for those that do contain verse numbers, the rephrasing makes some verse numbers inapplicable. The early editions are also very British in their English.

In Making It Right When You Feel Wronged, he draws on these experiences to lead the reader on a journey of insight and healing. Discussing how offenses occur and the trail of bitterness they leave behind, Wickwire prepares the reader to better understand the model Jesus sets for resolving hurts. He looks at how Bible characters confronted offenses, whether rightly or wrongly, and the consequences they faced. Then he uses Jesus' teachings to lay out clear steps to follow on the path toward freedom that comes only in forgiveness and release. For pastors and church leaders, Wickwire offers priceless insight into dealing with dissension in congregations. Genesis begins with the making of heaven and earth and all life, and ends with the image of a mummy—Joseph's—in a coffin. In between come many of the primal stories in Western culture: Adam and Eve's expulsion from the garden of Eden, Cain's murder of Abel, Noah and the Flood, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham's binding of Isaac, the covenant of God and Abraham, Isaac's blessing of Jacob in place of Esau, the saga of Joseph and his brothers. In Robert Alter's brilliant translation, these stories cohere in a powerful narrative of the tortuous relations between fathers and sons, husbands and wives, eldest and younger brothers, God and his chosen people, the people of Israel and their neighbors. Alter's translation honors the meanings and literary strategies of the ancient Hebrew and conveys them in fluent English prose. It recovers a Genesis with the continuity of theme and motif of a wholly conceived and fully realized book. His insightful, fully informed commentary illuminates the book in all its dimensions.

Discipline. For many of us, the word alone evokes dread. It's not that we don't want to be disciplined physically, mentally, and spiritually. The challenge seems too hard, and the motivation more about duty than desire. When it comes to our Christian walk, we don't want to be legalistic and just follow some set of rules. "A young man who wishes to remain a sound Atheist cannot be too careful of his reading. There are traps everywhere . . . God is, if I may say it, very unscrupulous." This book is not an autobiography. It is not a confession. It is, however, certainly one of the most beautiful and insightful accounts of a person coming to faith. Here, C.S. Lewis takes us from his childhood in Belfast through the loss of his mother, to boarding school and a youthful atheism in England, to the trenches of World War I, and then to Oxford, where he studied, read, and, ultimately, reasoned his way back to God. It is perhaps this aspect of Surprised by Joy that we—believers and nonbelievers—find most compelling and meaningful; Lewis was searching for joy, for an elusive and momentary sensation of glorious yearning, but he found it, and spiritual life, through the use of reason. In this highly personal, thoughtful, intelligent memoir, Lewis guides us toward joy and toward the surprise that awaits anyone who seeks a life beyond the expected."Lewis tempered his logic with a love for beauty, wonder, and magic . . . He speaks to us with all the power and life-changing force of a Plato, a Dante, and a Bunyan."— Christianity Today "The tension of these final chapters holds the interest like the close of a thriller."— Times Literary Supplement C. S. (Clive Staples) Lewis (1898–1963), one of the great writers of the twentieth century, also continues to be one of our most influential Christian thinkers. He wrote more than thirty books, both popular and scholarly, including The Chronicles of Narnia series, The Screwtape Letters , The Four Loves , Mere Christianity , and Till We Have Faces .

Would you suffer and die for Christ? "When the Church does not feel pain with those that are part of them, the Church's nerves ... become dead." Sabrina Wurmbrand, Co-founder of The Voice of the Martyrs In 1563, John Foxe began writing a book in tribute to Christian martyrs, beginning with Stephen, the first believer who died for the cause of Christ. Foxe's original work ended with the martyrs of his own day — those who were killed during the reign of "Bloody Mary." He wanted the Church to remember the martyrs, for he knew that the blood of the martyrs truly is the seed of the Church. Martyrdom is not a thing of the past. The Christian Church continues to endure great persecution in many places around the world. In fact, more Christians were affected by persecution, including martyrdom, during the twentieth century than in all previous centuries combined. Listen to the cries of the martyrs, and let their faith, courage, and love touch your life. This classic work will stir you, challenge you, and inspire you to surrender everything to Christ. It will greatly build your faith.

Since its publication almost 150 years ago, The Idea of a University has had an extraordinary influence on the shaping and goals of higher education. The issues that John Henry Newman raised―the place of religion and moral values in the university setting, the competing claims of liberal and professional education, the character of the academic community, the cultural role of literature, the relation of religion and science―have provoked discussion from Newman's time to our own. This edition of The Idea of a University includes the full text of "University Teaching" and four selections from "University Subjects," together with five essays by leading scholars that explore the background and the present day relevance of Newman's themes. In the essays Martha Garland discusses the character and organization of the early nineteenth-century English universities upon which Newman based much of his vision; Frank M. Turner traces the impact of Newman's influence during the vast expansion of higher education since World War II; George Marsden investigates how the decreasing emphasis on religion has affected higher education; Sara Castro Klaren examines the implications of Newman's views on education and literature for current debates between proponents of a curriculum based on western civilization and one based on multiculturalism; and George Landow considers what the advent of electronic communication will mean to university teaching, research, and community. To aid accessibility, the edition also includes an analytical table of contents, a chronology and biographical sketch of Newman's life, questions for discussion, expanded notes, and a glossary of names, all of which will help make this the standard teaching text for Newman's work.

Students are already being set on fire for God, planting missional communities, praying fervently and stepping out in faith to see God move in power to reach the lost. It is time to see this manifested on every campus, in every city and in every nation. Through his own personal stories, student testimonies and practical biblical teaching, Ma envisions and practically equips student and staff leaders to change themselves and their campuses for Christ. Readers of The Blueprint will receive a clear vision for revival and reformation of society, a specific spiritual DNA (passion for prayer, power evangelism and planting simple churches) and practical tools to see the vision for reformation become a reality. That’s the plan. Now to see the revolution unfold!

Do you ever feel like your desire for God is waning? Are you numb to the routine of church? What does it mean to be truly awakened to the wonder of the gospel? Jared Wilson contends that we must be regularly engaged and engaging others with the good news of the sacrificing, dying, rising, exalted person of Jesus Christ. Wilson reminds us of the death-proof, fail-proof King of kings who is before all things and in all things and holding all things together, and of the Spirit’s power to quicken our hearts and captivate our imaginations. The message of Gospel Wakefulness will make numbness the exception (rather than the norm) and reawaken us to the multifaceted brilliance of the gospel.

Too few people attending church today, even those in evangelical churches, are exposed to the gospel explicitly. Sure, many will hear about Jesus, and about being good and avoiding bad, but the gospel message simply isn't there--at least not in its specificity and its fullness. Inspired by the needs of both the overchurched and the unchurched, and bolstered by the common neglect of the explicit gospel within Christianity, Matt Chandler has written this punchy treatise. He begins with the specifics of the gospel--outlining what it is and what it is not--and then switches gears to focus on the fullness of the gospel and its massive implications on both personal and cosmic levels. Recognizing our tendency to fixate on either the micro or macro aspects of the gospel, Chandler also warns us of the dangers on either side--of becoming overly individualistic or syncretistic. Here is a call to true Christianity, to know the gospel explicitly, and to unite the church on the amazing grounds of the good news of Jesus!

'Without a hint of exaggeration,' says pastor and author Bill Hybels in his new book, The Power of a Hearing God, Having the Guts to Respond, 'the ability to discern divine direction has saved me from a life of sure boredom and self-destruction. God's well-timed words have redirected my path, rescued me from temptation and re-energized me during some of my deepest moments of despair.' In The Power of a Whisper, vision is cast for what life can look like when God's followers choose to hear from heaven as they navigate life on earth. Whispers that arbitrate key decisions, nudges that rescue from dark nights of the soul, promptings that spur on growth, urgings that come by way of another person, inspiration that opens once-glazed-over eyes to the terrible plight people face in this world---through firsthand accounts spanning fifty-seven years of life, more than thirty of which have been spent in the trenches of ministry, Hybels promotes passion in Christ-followers' hearts for being wide open to hearing from God, and for getting gutsier about doing exactly what he says to do. Something big happened 40 years ago. Teenagers broke out into 'tongues ' in school. Historic institutions like St Andrew s Cathedral and Wesley Methodist Church turned into chaotic places of Charismatic worship. Prayer and Bible study groups sprouted up along Shenton Way. People congregated in homes to experience more of the presence and power of God.The Charismatic Movement changed the face of Singaporean Protestant Christianity. A Charismatic Christian community was formed. Channels of spiritual Revival were opened as crowds packed schools, homes, churches, stadiums and conference halls. Christianity became relevant to the citizens of a new nation, caught amid sweeping societal changes that were constantly forcing the Church to play 'catch-up '.Consonant with Singaporean aspirations for significance, success and unstinting progress, Charismatic Christianity revealed the tangible dynamism of a God who was constantly working in the personal and professional lives of His children. Believers were drawn to the compelling promise of lives miraculously transformed by the Holy Spirit, and a God who was moving Singapore towards her destiny as the 'Antioch of Asia '.Unfolding His Story is the first attempt to document the Charismatic Movement in Singapore in its entirety. God is still unfolding His Story here. He moved mightily. He shaped the present state of our nation. He can and will move again.
