Description

Indeed a weird and chaotic book from one of the hotheads of the 1980s personal computer revolution. Sim Wong Hoo founded Creative Technologies, famous for the SoundBlaster line of sound cards. Him being from a Kampong (kind of Ghetto) in Singapore, becoming the leader of a billion-dollar company is an extraordinary tale. His story is drawn from autobiographical fragments in the book, interspersed with magic tricks for kids, tales of his philosophical views and one or more rants against humanity’s overuse of natural resources and abuse of fossil fuels. I got this book to learn more about the background of the SoundBlaster and its rival Adlib, but sadly there was no information about this. One of the most interesting chapters (The dark secrets of the CMS chip) got cut from the book. Too bad! But from the fragments that are there we can paint a picture of a highly competitive, inventive man, who had flashes of ADHD and grandeur, doing projects on a whim. Very insightful read. The writing is of course not on the level of professional authors, but given that this book was assembled in six weeks I wouldn’t have expected more…
