Description

Off to the Races is a quintessential Donald Byrd hard bop session originally recorded December 21, 1958 at Van Gelder Studio and released by Blue Note in 1959. The album pairs Byrd with a stellar frontline of Jackie McLean and Pepper Adams, supported by Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, and Art Taylor, delivering brisk, lyrical performances on tracks such as Lover Come Back to Me, Sudwest Funk, and Paul’s Pal. This recording remains a touchstone of Byrd's Blue Note years, emblematic of his melodic trumpet voice and tight ensemble interplay. The 2023 European reissue by Rat Pack Records, catalog IMT7783526.1, continues the music's hard bop vitality.
