Warm, witty coming-of-age about difference and belonging

This is the kind of middle grade novel people remember for how honest and gentle it feels without ever becoming heavy-handed. Catherine’s voice is funny, frustrated, and deeply human, and the story really shines in how it explores disability, friendship, and the pressure to seem normal. If you like books that are heartfelt, quietly eye-opening, and easy to connect with, this is a lovely one.

Description

This Newbery Honor Book by Cynthia Lord is a heartfelt and witty story about feeling different and finding acceptance beyond the rules. Twelve-year-old Catherine longs for a normal life while managing her brother David’s autism and a family centered on his needs. She has spent years trying to teach David the rules—from “a peach is not a funny-looking apple” to “keep your pants on in public”—to head off his embarrassing behaviors. But when she meets Jason, a surprising new sort-of friend, and Kristi, the next-door friend she’s always wished for, her own behavior begins to change, and she must ask: What is normal?
