Somerset Maugham, in his postscript to this collection of short stories, went out of his way to disclaim any resemblance between the characters which appear in them and the actual persons with whom he came into contact during his sojourn in the lands that make up Malaysia today. The stories themselves, of course, stand in their own right as classical specimens of their genre and make for just as gripping reading today as they did fifty years ago. For the cognoscenti of the Malay world and the role of the white man in it during his colonial heyday, they have an added appeal.

Binding of book is loose. Sunned covers with moderate foxing, some shelfwear, sticker shadow on front cover, sticker on back cover and some creasing on covers of book. Some tanning and foxing on edges of book. Moderate foxing and few waterstains on insides of covers. Some foxing on certain pages.
